Software Used
This environment was built by referencing sets from AMC's 2018 adaptation of The Terror, by Dan Simmons. The real-life Franklin Expedition departed in search of the Northwest Passage in 1845.
The wreck of the HMS Terror wasn't found again until 2016.In addition to building the scene, I have also set up a playable experience using UE5 blueprints so that you may experience the environment first hand.
The scene is set to make you feel as if you've stumbled upon this abandoned ship where there are long forgotten items to find and inspect.
Real Time Lighting with Lumen
With the use of some rectangular lights and the help of UE5's Lumen, I was able to achieve very nice real time lighting to emulate the lighting seen in shots of Crozier's cabin from the television show.
Process Timelapse
Efficient Texture Map Packing
PBR Textures
All textures were made in substance painter and Photoshop.
The images below were rendered in Blender.
Comparisons
Below are shot comparisons of AMC's "The Terror" and my environment in UE5.
I attempted to faithfully recreate the general atmosphere, lighting, and decor.
